Precision high-temperature sensors require temperature compensation. Quartzdyne pressure transducers use a temperature-sensitive quartz crystal for compensation. In an effort to shrink transducer packaging and to increase reliability, a prototype frequency output temperature sensor was designed using a 0.8um silicon bulk CMOS process. The 250°C operational sensor is based on a PTAT current generator. The design uses high-temperature design techniques that have been proven reliable in prior Quartzdyne ASICs. The output frequency is 34kHz at 30°C, with a sensitivity of 100Hz/°C and achievable accuracy of ±0.5°C from 25°C to 225°C. This paper will review the sensor’s characteristics, including the output linearity, hysteresis, accelerated aging and temperature cycling to demonstrate the performance, long term reliability and repeatability of the sensor.
Past experiments cataloged Quartzdyne transducer drift at maximum rated pressure and temperature while comparing results with competing strain based technologies. Recently, several customers have asked for a description of Quartzdyne transducer drift at intermediate conditions similar to those experienced in the field. In order to meet this request, Quartzdyne engineers are currently testing transducers over a matrix of pressures and temperatures similar to those experienced downhole. The need to look beyond conventional sources of oil and gas is an increasing reality of the industry. This growing need is driving demand for precision quartz transducers capable of pressures and temperatures beyond what is already considered to be high pressure and high temperature (we currently offer 30,000 psi/200 C pressure transducers). In response to the industry’s need, Quartzdyne has developed a proprietary quartz technology that enables the pressure transducers to perform in higher pressure and temperature environments. Quartzdyne will soon be launching transducers rated for 35,000 psia and 225°C. Quartzdyne is also targeting 40,000 psia and 260°C for the next phase of development. Quartzdyne recently announced a modest list price increase of 1%, effective on orders placed after January 1, 2014. Quartzdyne works hard to control prices both externally with vendors and internally with lean related initiatives.
